WHY USE A  FOOD JOURNAL?

1.To note exactly what you are consuming and how it makes you feel. Do you have a goal in mind of how you would like to eat, relate to food, feel, look?

2. It may reveal food sensitivities or intolerances that you were not taking notice of and thus journaling can really help in improving your overall health and energy levels.

3. To try to introduce new foods, new ingredients, for opening new recipe books. This may lead you to really sourcing the best quality products in new shops or in different areas of town.

4.  Consistent tracking = awareness = behavioural change. That is to say, the act of writing and recording data reveals patterning and this is often the catalyst for the laying down of new good habits and routines that benefit our health.

5. To look back as a reference for good food weeks when you can´t decide what to buy or eat. It just makes life easier and you are less likely to go “off track”.

6. This planning and documenting helps you feel in control of your nutrition. It makes you realise how much you care about your body and how food affects us on every level physically, mentally and emotionally.

7. To plan your meals and your shopping. Food planning gives you self control which is known to be essential when we have poor eating and drinking habits. Even if you have a great diet already, it “ switches it up a notch”.

8. It can be a great resource for providing insightful information to health advisors such as doctors, nutritionist, personal trainers.

9. To be able to see clearly poor food choices and patterns that have become bad habits.

10.  You can see not only daily and weekly patterns, but also how the moon cycle and seasons affect us. It´s also great to eat with the seasons not just on a nutritious connect- with-the-earth level but also for economies sake too.

  • Hi Kay absolutely love My Food Journal.

    I found the chapters really informative, useful to have the psychological issues and physiological issues (think that’s what I mean) and the connections between them explained so clearly. All makes perfect sense when you look at it in the round i.e. How what you eat affects how you feel but then also how you feel when you eat also has an impact -something I hadn’t really thought of before i.e. the need to be relaxed, take time etc. My Food Journal reconnects us with the pleasures of preparing and eating food at a time when so many of us just see food as fuel.

    The journal pages are easy to complete. I like the layout as it helps you to look at and think about the day overall, rather than just meal by meal. I particularly like the idea of recording how you feel before and after. When used over a period of time this will help identify what foods have positive or negative influences on how you feel. I’m aware that I often suffer ‘low mood’ late afternoon so reading the journal has made me think I should have a small nutritious snack, maybe a few nuts, mid afternoon.The Plan Your Meals section is useful too as it’s much easier to eat well when you can plan rather thinking what to eat at the last minute.

    As in the My Body Journal I like the words of wisdom and accompanying pictures, the pages for inspirations and recipes and the information about yourself and how you have benefited from your journaling in terms of your own health and relationship with food.

    The recipe pages for the fermented veggies are very clear in terms of instructions but also very attractive and make me want to have a go at making them.

    Meant to say earlier -I find the example page for use of the journal is helpful and demonstrates clearly how completing the journal pages provides an overview of your day for review.
